Conflict and Contact: From John Donne’s “Dialogue of One” to T. S. Eliot’s Monologue

This paper aims to read Donne’s certain love poems in conjunction with Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. Eliot believes English poetry composed the 17th century resonates that 20th century. Therefore, this article explores similarities and differences between metaphysical modernist poetry. discussion is predicated upon notion wholeness Donne idea fragmentation Eliot. The exploration themes completion disintegration initially focuses on concept ecstasy, analyses how boundary self other dissolves conventional dichotomy body spirit challenged. also deals irony terms compares use poem employment conceits based binary oppositions poems. study further concentrates both poets regards sensuousness language. It finally contrasts unified sensibility seventeenth-century poet dissociated twentieth-century poet. concludes “dialogue one” rests conflict contact whereas monologue does not lead contact.
